Random Team Generator Wheel

Need to make random teams without the "captains pick" drama? This random team maker splits any list of names into fair teams for you. Type or paste your list, choose how many teams you need and how many people fit in each, and let the randomizer for teams do the rest — no signup, right in your browser. Slow mode spins the wheel for every candidate and announces who goes to which team; Fast mode is a one-click team chooser that creates random teams instantly.

How to create random teams in 3 steps

  1. Enter names. One per line in the entries panel — classmates, players, coworkers. The wheel updates as you type.
  2. Set up your teams. Pick the number of teams (2–12), an optional max per team, and rename teams if you like — Red vs Blue beats Team 1 vs Team 2.
  3. Spin or split. Slow mode spins for each name and announces "Alex goes to Red Team". Fast mode makes random teams immediately. Copy the result and you're done.

Show your teams on a bigger screen

Once the draft is done, Open team list puts every team on its own page — one card per team with all its members, plus the Unassigned bench if anyone is left over. The roster travels inside the link, so you can send it to the group chat, open it on another device, or drop it into an OBS browser source.

On that page, Fullscreen hides everything except the team cards and scales them up for a projector, TV or classroom screen — press Esc to come back. Copy results gives you the same rosters as plain text.

Is this team generator actually random?

Yes — every spin picks uniformly among the names still on the wheel, and Fast mode shuffles the whole list before dealing. Names are dealt round-robin (first to Team 1, next to Team 2, and so on), the same way you'd deal cards: team sizes stay within one person of each other at every moment, and no team gets stacked. If a team hits its size limit it's skipped; if every team is full, the remaining names go to a visible Unassigned bench — the random group maker never silently drops anyone.

What people use the team randomizer for

Classroom & school

A random group generator for project groups, reading circles and PE lessons. Fast mode gets 30 kids into 6 groups before anyone can argue; slow mode turns picking teams into the fun part of the lesson.

Sports & pickup games

A random team builder for football, basketball, volleyball or a golf scramble. Set "max per team" to your side size and the team randomizer fills both sides fairly.

Work & workshops

Create random teams for hackathons, breakout rooms, retro groups or a random matching generator for pair programming. The round-robin deal keeps groups balanced without anyone playing favorites.

Party & gaming

Squads for quizzes, board games or 5v5 nights. Rename the teams, put the wheel on the TV, and let slow mode call the draft out loud.

Random team generator FAQ

How does the random team generator work?

Enter one name per line, choose the number of teams (up to 12) and an optional size limit, then either spin the wheel for each name (Slow mode) or split everyone at once (Fast mode). Names are assigned round-robin, so the teams come out even.

What happens if the names don't divide evenly?

Teams differ by at most one person — the same as dealing cards. With a size limit set, full teams are skipped, and once every team is full the remaining names land on a visible Unassigned bench so nobody disappears.

Can I set team names and team sizes?

Yes. Rename any team (Red, Blue, Sharks…) and set a max per team, or leave it blank and the team maker balances sizes automatically. The wheel is a name randomizer for teams, not a team-name generator — but your own names always beat generated ones.

Do my names get uploaded anywhere?

No. The team picker runs entirely in your browser — lists are stored locally on your device and never sent to a server.

Can I redo the draw?

Any time. Reset returns everyone to the wheel and keeps your team setup, so you can re-run the same random teams generator for the next round, lesson or match.

Can I show the teams on a projector or share them?

Yes. Open team list opens every team on its own page, with the roster encoded in the link so you can share it or open it on another device. On that page Fullscreen shows only the team cards, scaled up for a projector, TV or stream.
