Make random groups

Start a name with * to make that person a group leader.

Split into

More options: leftovers, keep apart, group names
When names don't divide evenly

One pair per line. These two never land in the same group.

People who already shared a group in your last 5 rounds are kept apart when possible. Shuffle again replaces the latest round.

Leaders: names that start with * are spread one per group and listed first.

How to make random groups

  1. 1. Paste the names

Type or paste one name per line, for example a class list copied from a spreadsheet. The counter shows how many names there are.

  2. 2. Choose how to split

Pick a number of groups, or a number of people per group, and the line under the buttons shows the result before you generate it. Make pairs splits everyone into groups of two.

  3. 3. Generate and share

Press Generate groups. Shuffle again for a new draw, then copy, print, download a CSV or open the groups on a big screen.

Every option

OptionWhat it does
Number of groupsSplits the names into 1 to 50 groups whose sizes differ by at most one person.
People per groupMakes groups of the size you choose, for example 4 per group. Make pairs sets it to 2.
Leftover namesWhen the names don't divide evenly, the extras are spread one per group (30 names by 4: five groups of 4 and two of 5), or they form one smaller group (seven groups of 4 and one of 2).
LeadersStart a name with * and it goes first in its group, one leader per group. Extra leaders are placed like everyone else.
Keep apartWrite pairs like "Ava / Liam", one per line, and those two never share a group. If that is impossible with the chosen number of groups, the page tells you.
Avoid repeatsRemembers your last 5 rounds and re-draws so that people who already worked together land in new groups, as long as enough new combinations exist.
Group namesGroup 1, 2, 3, colors, animals, Greek letters or the NATO alphabet.
Copy, print, CSV, big screenCopy the groups as text, print only the group cards, download a CSV for a spreadsheet, or open a full-screen view for a projector.

Random partners and pairs

To pair up a class, press Make pairs. With an odd number of names the extra person joins one pair as a group of three, or choose "Put them in one smaller group" to leave one person on their own. A class of 30 makes 15 pairs.

Use Keep apart for partners who should not work together again, and Shuffle again for a new set of partners every lesson.

What people use random groups for

Classrooms

Project groups, lab partners, reading circles and table groups. Random groups mix the class and end the "who works with whom" debate.

Workshops and training

Breakout rooms and discussion tables of a fixed size, with facilitators marked as leaders so every table has one.

Meetings and teams at work

Random coffee pairs, peer reviews and hackathon teams, without anyone choosing their friends.

How the random split works

The names are shuffled with the browser's cryptographically secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) and dealt into groups of the planned sizes, so every way of splitting the list is equally likely. Leaders are shuffled separately and placed one per group.

With keep-apart rules the whole split is drawn again, up to 500 times, until no pair shares a group, so the result stays a fair random choice among the splits that follow your rules. Names stay in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

FAQ

Random group generator: questions and answers

How does the random group generator work?

Paste one name per line, choose a number of groups or a number of people per group, and press Generate groups. The names are shuffled with a secure random number generator and split into groups of equal size, give or take one person.

Can I choose the number of people per group?

Yes. Select People per group and enter a size, for example 4. The line under the buttons shows how many groups that makes before you generate them.

What happens when the names don't divide evenly?

By default the extra names are spread over the groups, so 30 names in groups of 4 become five groups of 4 and two of 5. Under More options you can put the extras in one smaller group instead: seven groups of 4 and one of 2.

How do I make random pairs or partners?

Press Make pairs. Everyone is split into groups of two; with an odd number of names one group has three people, or one person is left alone if you choose one smaller group for the leftovers.

Can I keep two people apart or choose group leaders?

Yes. Under More options, write pairs like "Ava / Liam" to keep them in different groups. Start a name with * to make that person a leader: leaders are spread one per group and listed first.

Is it really random?

Yes. The shuffle uses the browser's cryptographically secure random generator, and every way of splitting the list is equally likely. Your names stay in your browser and are never uploaded.

Can I print the groups or show them on a projector?

Yes. Print shows only the group cards, Download CSV opens in Excel or Google Sheets, and Big screen opens the groups on their own page with a full-screen view for a projector or TV.

What's the difference from the team wheel?

This page splits a whole list in one click, up to 50 groups. The Random Team Generator wheel drafts up to 12 teams one name at a time with a spinning wheel, which is more fun for sports and games. The Reveal on the team wheel button sends the same names there.
